How to Make a Pirate Hat
Having a pirate birthday party theme is a lot of fun and will really keep the kids entertained. But, you will need favors and other accessories to really pull the theme off. A great way to not only incorporate the pirate theme, but to also occupy the kids, is to have them make a pirate hat at the party. This is an inexpensive way to get the kids dressed as part of the theme, keep them occupied during the party, and really carry out the pirate birthday party!
You will need some basic supplies. Depending on your budget you might opt for certain materials over others. For example, the base of your hat will be either black construction paper or black felt. Whichever you choose you will need to use a 22 inch by 28 inch sheet/piece. Of course, you will need other supplies as well. These include a hole punch, scissors, black string, and black masking tape.
First, you will need to create the brim of the hat. Take a piece of sting and tie it onto the pencil. This will make a compass. You will need to tie a knot in the string approximately nine inches down. Place the knot in the middle of the paper or felt and then take the pencil and draw a circle. Once you have the first circle drawn you will need to tie another knot about three inches down and draw another circle inside the first circle. Now you will need to cut out both circles.
Next, you will want to make the crown of the hat. You will need to measure a piece of paper that fits around your head and make sure it is 3 ½ inches wide. Once you wrap the paper around your head staple it quickly to keep it the correct size. Next take the middle circle and trace the crown. After you have done this cut several slashes into the traced line. You can then fold the slashes down to secure the crown and then tape the slashes down with the black tape.
Finally, you will want to take a pencil and mark the brim’s edge on three points approximately 1/8 from the edge of the brim. On these points you will use the hole punch. Then, fold the brim of the hat up at each hole and make another hole on the crown. Here you will place a piece of black string in the holes and tie. Do this for all three holes and your pirate hat will be made.
Following these easy steps will take no time at all and everyone will have a really cool pirate hat that they made all on their own. If you are showing a large group of children how to make this pirate hat then you might ask several parents to help out so that everyone makes a great pirate hat and there are no tears.
