While the felt paper is much more expensive, it is a very nice material. However, since it is likely that the children will eventually outgrow the hat, some parents may opt for construction paper. No matter which material you go with, you will want to make sure it has a measurement of 22 x 28 inches. Once you have this, there are other supplies you will need as well. These supplies are masking tape (black in color), black strings, a hole puncher, and scissors. Once you have all these materials, you will next want to start the construction of the actual hat. You can start this process by creating the brim. You will want to take a part of the string and attach it to the pencil by tying it.

Once you do this, you will create a compass. A knot must be tied in the string that extends down 9 inches. The knot should be placed in the mid section of the paper, and you will want to take the pencil and use it to sketch a circle. After the initial circle is drawn, you will want to tie an additional knot approximately three inches below and sketch an additional circle within the first circle. After you’ve done this, you will want to cut out each circle. The next step is to create the crown for the hat. You will want to take a piece of paper and measure a piece that can fit around your head. It should have a measurement of about 3.5 inches in width. After you’ve wrapped this piece of paper around your head, you will next want to staple it.

Doing this will ensure that the size is right. You will want to grab the middle circle you cut earlier and use it to measure the crown. Once you have finished this, you will next want to cut a few slashes into the line that you’ve traced. You can think take the slashes and fold them down to make sure the crown is secured. It will also be possible for you to take the black tape and use it to make sure the crown is secure. After you have completed all these steps, you will want to grab the pencil and mark the tip of the brim for three points, and these points should be 1/8 from the edge. You will want to use the hole puncher to punch holes in the points once you’ve made them. All you have to do is place a string in the holes and tie them, and your hat will be complete.

You will need some basic supplies. Depending on your budget you might opt for certain materials over others. For example, the base of your hat will be either black construction paper or black felt. Whichever you choose you will need to use a 22 inch by 28 inch sheet/piece. Of course, you will need other supplies as well. These include a hole punch, scissors, black string, and black masking tape.

Once you wrap the paper around your head staple it quickly to keep it the correct size. Next take the middle circle and trace the crown. After you have done this cut several slashes into the traced line. You can then fold the slashes down to secure the crown and then tape the slashes down with the black tape.

Finally, you will want to take a pencil and mark the brim’s edge on three points approximately 1/8 from the edge of the brim. On these points you will use the hole punch. Then, fold the brim of the hat up at each hole and make another hole on the crown. Here you will place a piece of black string in the holes and tie. Do this for all three holes and your pirate hat will be made.

Following these easy steps will take no time at all and everyone will have a really cool pirate hat that they made all on their own.
